A detail from the centre of a poster I’ve been developing; I’ve already worked out all the details for 45-50 illustrations that form a narrative depiction of Sam’s experience with Cancer (diagnosis, treatment, recovery.) I watched a documentary ‘making of’ featurette for the film adaptation of Jenny Downham’s ‘Before I Die.’ It follows the story of a teenager who is dealing with terminal leukaemia. They touch on a lot of valid details recounting conversations they’ve had with Cancer survivors. There is an intensity to everything a patient interacts with when faced with the knowledge that something is inside their body that might kill them. I’m paraphrasing, but they introduced a parable about a bloke who was recounting ‘ the blossomest blossoms.’ It’s like your senses and your awareness of everything that’s going on inside your body is heightened… When you’re scared to death: everything you see and feel and touch and do has a sort if urgency about it. Cancer amplifies the every day.
